Opera director, mime, and pedagogue David Radamés Toro applies his experience in music and stage movement to direct creative and meaningful opera.

ABOUT DAVID
David Radamés Toro, applies his backgrounds in music and mime to create innovative opera productions with a focus on cultural relevance, diverse representation, and a modern opera experience to engage with new and returning audiences. Parterre.com stated about his 2025 production of Armienta’s Zorro that “The success of Zorro on the California Theatre stage was due in no small part to Toro’s keen and sensitive direction." The Twin Cities Star Tribune wrote that his 2023 production of Cruzar la cara de la luna was "one of the most exciting and deeply involving productions that Minnesota Opera has presented so far this century." He has worked at companies including Minnesota Opera, the Wexford Opera Festival, Washington National Opera, Opera San Jose, Central City Opera, Tri-Cities Opera, Portland Opera, and Austin Opera.

In addition to directing, David coaches singers in acting and audition prep, as well as offers classes and workshops in physical theatre. His workshops in Gestural Mechanics draw from the techniques of Anne Bogart and Tadashi Suzuki, Ettiene Decroux, and Marcel Marceau with the goal of empowering singers to effectively combine musical expression and movement. He has taught acting workshops at Minnesota Opera, The Academy of Vocal Arts, Opera Neo, and Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.

An alum of the Minnesota Opera Resident Artist Program, David regularly returns to direct for the company. The Minneapolis Star Tribune noted that, in his 2020 production, "this staging showed that Flight has a beating heart, and something to say." A frequent director at Opera Neo, the San Diego Story praised his work in Cavalli's Il Giasone, where he "made a splash as the director."
